Representatives of Keep Me Posted UK attended a meeting hosted by Austrian MEP Heinz Becker and Keep Me Posted EU at the European Parliament on Tuesday morning. The meeting, entitled “Paper or digital? It is every citizen’s right to choose!”, brought together supporters of the KMP EU campaign to discuss the citizen’s right to choose how they communicate with governments, private businesses and service providers. Representatives of organisations from across Europe and MEPs attended, with speakers including MEP Heinz Becker; Lucy Anderson, British MEP and Rapporteur for the Opinion on the Application of the Postal Services Directive; Phillipe Seidel, representative of AGE Platform Europe; and David Gold, representative of KMP UK.
Following the meeting, David Gold expressed his appreciation for the European campaign. “It’s fantastic that the campaign has gained such prominence at the EU level,” he said. “The meeting on Tuesday proved that this is a campaign that has support across the European nations, and that this support is still growing.”
The KMP UK campaign has not only inspired the similarly titled campaign at EU level, but also further national campaigns in Austria, Belgium and Spain, as well as further afield in Australia.
As the momentum behind the European campaign picks up speed, MEP Heinz Becker stressed that the campaign “must lead to political action to protect citizen’s rights.” This call for political action was echoed at the meeting, with all attendees in favour of pushing for European legislation on citizens’ right to choose.
