Keep Me Posted has responded to reports that applications for EU subsidies for farmers have fallen since the system for claiming moved online only in January this year. Here's our comment:

A spokesperson for the Keep Me Posted campaign, said: “Our campaign has long been aware of the pressure on people in rural communities, particularly farmers, to ‘go digital’, despite the fact that many do not have adequate broadband access. It is clear from these reports that moving the applications process for EU farming subsidies system online is excluding many farmers from assistance that they are entitled to. This is very concerning.

“It is vital that we make every effort to support our nation’s farmers and that any system they are required to use is fit-for-purpose. They should be given the choice to submit their applications by post, as they have had previously.”
