Judith Donovan CBE, Chair of the Keep Me Posted campaign comments on HMRC’s announcement that it will relax mandatory filing of VAT returns online following a recent consultation:
“The Keep Me Posted campaign welcomes the news that HMRC has chosen to relax mandatory online filing of VAT returns in certain circumstances. When the campaign contributed to the recent consultation, we warned of the potential impact such measures could have, particularly on people facing difficulties due to their age, disability or the remoteness of their location. While we feel it would be preferable to allow all people to use these alternative services when filing their tax return, it is encouraging that these concerns are at least being heeded in the case of vulnerable consumers.
“Now, it is vital that HMRC follow through on today’s commitment to promote their telephone filing service as widely as possible so that we can ensure that all people who are eligible to utilise the service are aware of it.”
