Business Disability Forum is pleased to support Keep Me Posted, a national campaign calling for organisations including building societies, banks, utility companies, local authorities and telecoms providers, to give customers more choice in how they are communicated with. The campaign maintains that all customers should have access to paper bills, if they request them, without charge or penalty.
Keep Me Posted is driven by a team of representatives from charities, consumer groups and businesses. The campaign responds to findings which suggest that moves towards digital only communication could be presenting barriers to disabled customers when managing their financial affairs. A number of high street providers such as RBS, NatWest and Ovo Energy have already joined the campaign and been recognised for their commitment to ensuring that their customers are able to receive paper bills.
In 2015 the Office of National Statistics found that 25 per cent of disabled adults in the UK had never used the internet. Research undertaken by Keep Me Posted found that consumers who received financial correspondence electronically were less likely to be able to assess the health of their accounts (48 per cent) than those who received this information by paper (75 per cent).
David Goodchild, Interim CEO, Business Disability Forum, said: “As more businesses move to a digital-first model it is vital to ensure accessibility remains a key priority, which is why we’re pleased to support this campaign.
“Findings from Keep Me Posted and the Office of National Statistics illustrate that the need to ensure that this move to digital communications does not come at the expense of accessibility and choice.”
