Bradford Council has been awarded a ‘Mark of Distinction’ by the Keep Me Posted campaign. The Mark acts as a symbol to local residents that they will have the right to receive their council tax bill by post.
Bradford Council serves more than 531,000 local residents and it has been awarded a Mark of Distinction due to its commitment to providing residents with paper bills. Residents of Bradford who would prefer to receive paper council tax bills can do so, without charge or penalty. The council joins a number of UK water, energy and financial services companies who currently back the campaign, including recent recipient Cheshire East Council.
Judith Donovan CBE, Chair, of the Keep Me Posted campaign, said: “This is a move that will protect the rights of the local residents of Bradford by giving them a choice in how they receive their council tax bills and statements. I am delighted to award Bradford Council with the Keep Me Posted campaign’s ‘Best Practice’ Mark of Distinction.
“We know that paper bills are still a vital part of people’s lives. Interestingly, even those who are internet savvy may find they are still better able to manage their finances when using paper statements (75% vs. 48% of those with electronic payments)*. Bradford Council has made a commitment to providing its residents with communications choice, we hope other local councils follow suit.”
Martin Stubbs at Bradford Council said: “Bradford Council is keen that its resident’s use online services, but recognises that where this is not appropriate, alternative options must be available; continuing to provide paper bills is one such way and I am delighted that Bradford is one of the first areas in the country to be recognised for this with a ‘Mark of Distinction’ from the Keep Me Posted campaign.”
Bradford Council joins the Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest, Ulster Bank, Principality Building Society, Welsh Water, Yorkshire Water, Bristol Water, Wessex Water, OVO Energy, Thames Water and Cheshire East Council as one of the service providers publically recognised by the campaign as providing paper bills and statements to its customers:
- Without imposing charges or other penalties**
- Without removing paper or altering frequency unless there is prior agreement
- Without taking away continued access to online

** The campaign will also begin awarding some companies a ‘Good Practice’ Mark, in the event that they charge for paper bills but in a way that is considered fair and equitable to the cost of providing the bill.
